Oleg Orlov: investigation into Zarema Gaisanova's kidnapping should be resumed

After the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has pronounced the decision to hold Russia responsible for the kidnapping in Chechnya of Zarema Gaisanova, a staff member of the "Danish Refugee Council", the competent authorities shall carry out an effective investigation into the circumstances of the crime. This was stated by Oleg Orlov, a member of the Board of the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial".

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 12, the ECtHR pronounced the decision on the complaint filed by Lida Gaisanova, the mother of kidnapped Zarema Gaisanova, and found Russia responsible for the kidnapping. According to the ECtHR's decision, the applicant is to be paid compensation in the amount of 60,000 euros.

Apart from payment of compensation in the amount of 60,000 euros, the Russian side should resume the investigation into the case, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told by Oleg Orlov, a member of the Board of the HRC "Memorial".

"Russia shall do two things. Firstly, it is to pay the compensation awarded to family members of the kidnapped woman. And secondly, Russia should resume the investigation into the case, investigate it, find the persons responsible for the crime, and punish them," Oleg Orlov has said.
