Wife of Talekh Khasmamedov claims threat to his life in penal colony

Talekh Khasmamedov, who is serving his sentence in prison in Azerbaijan, needs serious medical treatment. This was reported by Fakhriya Khasmamedova, the wife of the human rights defender.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on February 24, 2015, Talekh Khasmamedov, the leader of the organization "Law and Right", was detained in the town of Goychay on suspicion of beating a local resident, who was also detained by police. On July 22, the Goychay Court found Talekh Khasmamedov guilty of disorderly conduct and sentenced him to three years of imprisonment.

"My innocent husband has been kept in detention for one year already. He was thrown in jail by order of officials of the executive power of the Goychay District. On January 3, I together with daughters visited my husband in the penal colony No. 13 in Baku. Talekh felt very bad," Fakhriya Khasmamedova has stated.

According to the woman, Talekh Khasmamedov suffers from severe headaches. Fakhriya Khasmamedova has said that she uses the media to appeal to the administration of the Penitentiary Service to take urgent measures to provide medical treatment to her husband.

In December 2015, Talekh Khasmamedov was included in the list of political prisoners, prepared by activists of civil society in Azerbaijan.

The fact that Talekh Khasmamedov is seriously ill has been also confirmed by Oktai Gyulalyev, the leader of the public alliance "Azerbaijan without Political Prisoners".

Iftikhar Gurbanov, Deputy Chief of the Chief Medical Department of the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) of Azerbaijan, has promised that the MoJ will respond to the appeal of Fakhriya Khasmamedova.
