Sogomon Kocharyan dies in Armenia

Last night, Sogomon Kocharyan, a Karabakh war veteran, freed from a life sentence by the court because of his decease, has died in hospital.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in Armenia, Sogomon Kocharyan became the first life prisoner, released by the court from further service of his life sentence. According to representatives of Sogomon Kocharyan, the court's decision on his release was made under the influence of the media and society.

The death of Sogomon Kocharyan at the "Saint Gregory the Illuminator" medical centre was reported by his sister Anzhela Apresyan.

In 1995, Sogomon Kocharyan, a veteran of the Karabakh war, Category II invalid, was charged with the murder of a citizen of Iran, an ethnic Azerbaijani, and sentenced to death penalty. However, yet in 1991, the country declared a moratorium on the death penalty, and in 2003, the death penalty was abolished after the adoption of the new Criminal Code.
