Chaniya: events in Sukhumi may trigger new crisis in Abkhazia

In the opinion of Isida Chaniya, the editor-in-chief of the Abkhazian edition "Needed Newspaper", the today's actions in Sukhumi, as well as statements of the President and the opposition, may result in serious political consequences. In his turn, Alkhaz Kvitsiniya, the acting chairman of the "Amtsakhara" Party, said that there would be no illegal overthrow of the existent power.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that today the delegates of the extraordinary congress of the oppositional "Amtsakhara" Party expressed distrust to President Raul Khajimba and demanded his immediate resignation. The latter said, in his turn, that he would not resign till the end of his term.

The demand of President's resignation is supported by the block of oppositional forces, which unites the "Amtsakhara" Party, the "Apra" Foundation for Socio-Economic and Political Studies, and public organizations "Women in Politics" and "Abzankhara", said Isida Chaniya.

It her estimates, the rally in Sukhumi in support of Khajimba gathered about seven thousand people. Ms Chaniya has noted that the today's events reminded her of "the events of May 2014, as a result of which the former president Alexander Ankvab had to resign."

The main claim of the population of Abkhazia to the authorities is in "improper use of Russia's help", said the editor-in-chief.

The block the oppositional forces is not calling to illegal overthrow of power and acts strictly within the bounds of the law, said Alkhaz Kvitsiniya: "We don't want a civil war."
