Investigation into case of Akhmednabi Akhmednabiyev's murder sabotaged, advocate asserts

In Dagestan, investigators violate the requirements of the law on the procedure for registration and consideration of citizens' complaints and reports about crimes. This was stated by an advocate in the case of the murder of journalist Akhmednabi Akhmednabiyev in the open letter addressed to Alexander Bastrykin, Chief of the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF).

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Akhmednabi Akhmednabiyev was killed on the outskirts of Makhachkala on July 9, 2013. He became the 17th journalist killed in Dagestan for 20 years. Investigators considered the professional activities of Akhmednabi Akhmednabiyev as the primary version of the crime.

The crime, like several attempts on the journalist, has not been solved till present, and no actual investigations are being conducted even after the need of proper investigation was emphasized by Russian President Vladimir Putin. This was reported by Abdurashid Sheikhov, an advocate of the Advocates' Chamber of the Republic of Dagestan.

According to Abdurashid Sheikhov, the failure to act demonstrated by investigators of the ICRF's Investigating Department for Dagestan proves their unwillingness to solve the crime. The advocate notes that in the case of the Akhmednabi Akhmednabiyev's murder, one of the witnesses confirmed that he was asked to kill the journalist; however, no criminal proceedings were instituted against the above witness involved in the case or against the person mentioned by him as an originator of the crime.
