Grozny celebrates Day of Chechen Woman under enhanced security measures

Chechnya holds celebrations on the occasion of the Day of Chechen Woman. Residents of the Chechen Republic reported on enhancement of security measures in Grozny and expressed their dissatisfaction with the large number of holidays celebrated in Chechnya.

Every year, Chechnya celebrates the Day of Chechen Woman on the third Sunday of September. The related decree was signed by Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov in February 2009. The holiday was established in memory of 46 deceased Chechen young women, residents of the Chechen village of Dadi-Yurt destroyed during the Caucasian war. It was then noted that the holiday had been established "in order to strengthen the role of Chechen women in public life."

The main activities to celebrate the Day of Chechen Woman are held in Grozny. Residents of the Chechen capital reported on enhancement of security measures in the city centre.

Meanwhile, some residents of the Chechen Republic express their dissatisfaction with celebrations and holidays organized by the authorities.

According to Magomed, a resident of Chechnya, the organization of the festive events takes a lot of money from the budget.

"Like people from other places, we celebrate the Women's Day on March 8, and I do not see any need to declare another holiday as the Day of Chechen Woman," says local resident Roza.
