Journalist Shirin Abbasov arrested for 30 days

Azerbaijani freelance journalist Shirin Abbasov is sentenced to 30 days of administrative arrest. Officials from the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) did not specify what kind of administrative offense had been committed by the journalist.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 16, colleagues and acquaintances reported the disappearance of Azerbaijani journalist Shirin Abbasov, who cooperated with the "Meydan TV" online TV Channel.

On September 17, it became known that Shirin Abbasov was detained by policemen and was kept at the Chief Directorate for Combating Organized Crime (known as GUBOP) of the Azerbaijani MIA. In the evening, it was also reported that Shirin Abbasov was sentenced to 30 days of administrative arrest. This was told to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent by his advocate Elchin Sadygov.

"Being an advocate, I was not provided with any official information. I was not accepted at the GUBOP. In my presence, mother of Shirin Abbasov was called to the GUBOP, and she was informed that her son had been sentenced to a 30-day administrative arrest. Meanwhile, she was not explained what kind of administrative offense was committed by her son Shirin Abbasov and when the trial was held," the advocate has stated.
