Azerbaijani law obliged those who plan to get married to undergo medical examination

Azerbaijan has enforced a law about mandatory medical examination of those who plan to get married. According to the law, access to the results of the examination is allowed for a limited circle of people, but some commentators do not rule out potential violations.

On October 17, the Azerbaijani parliament adopted amendments to the Family Code, according to which the people wishing to get married shall undergo a medical examination intended to define whether the groom and the bride are free of the diseases from the list compiled by the Cabinet of Ministers, which includes, among others, dermatology-venereal diseases and AIDS. On December 17, the above amendments were decreed by President Ilham Aliev.

In August 2013, Musa Guliev, Deputy Chairman of the Social Policy Committee of the Parliament of Azerbaijan, stressed that the compulsory medical examination is carried out "in all developed countries," writes the edition named “Zerkalo” (Mirror).

Khady Radjabli, Chairman of the Social Policy Committee of the Milli Majlis, has stressed that these measures are designed to deal with a number of hereditary and genetic diseases, including thalassemia and haemophilia. Radjabli has added that when the marrying persons will know about the health of each other, it will help to avoid delivery of sick children.
