16 inmates of Batumi prison go on hunger strike
In Batumi, a group of 16 prisoners not satisfied with detention conditions in the Batumi prison No. 3 declared a hunger strike.
According to the report issued by the Georgian Ombudsman' Office, the monitoring carried out by the human rights defenders in the Batumi prison No. 3 revealed that the penitentiary institution faces problems with ventilation of cells and water supply and that no rehabilitation programme was implemented, the IA "News-Georgia" reports.
"The prisoners, who were transferred to the penitentiary institution No. 3 from eastern Georgia, have problems with maintaining contacts with their family members and advocates. Besides, the monitoring has revealed that the prison No. 3 has a problem with medical care," the "Echo of the Caucasus" quotes today the Georgian Ombudsman as stating.
