Moscow Lezgins can learn their mother tongue in Sunday School

A Sunday School for school-age children with free lessons of the Lezgin language was opened in Moscow under the Federal Lezgin National-Cultural Autonomy (FLNCA). Adults can visit lessons on a paid basis.

The school opening took place on November 8. Its curriculum includes the Lezgin language and literature, history of Dagestan and the Lezgin nation, Lezgins' customs and traditions, arts and crafts, and folk music, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told at the press service of the FLNCA.

Arif Kerimov, the president of the FLNCA and a member of the Russian Presidential Council on Interethnic Relations, said that for the Lezgins living in Moscow, far from their homeland, the preservation of their native language and culture is highly topical.

"Of course, not everyone is ready to spend his or her weekend for the school, but we hope that with time more and more people will come to us. At the moment, we have listed six children and nine adults; and by the end of the year we expect to have up to 15 people in each of the groups," Gusen Shakhpazov, the head of the executive committee and youth department of the FLNCA, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
