Shirvan khanate

Feudal state in Northern Azerbaijan, in Shemakha area. Arised in 1748 after clearing of oppression of the Iranian master Nadir-Shah. It was one of the most large and rich khanates of Northern Azerbaijan. The basic employments of the population - agriculture, silk and various fabrics manufacturing, trade, crafts. Shirvan khanate joined Russia in 1805 and it was confirmed by Gjulistan peace treaty of 1813. In 1820 the khanate management had been abolished and replaced with Russian administration. In the Shirvan khanate territory the Shirvan province was formed and came into the Caspian area in 1840 (since 1846 - Shemakhinskaya, since 1859 - the Baku province). Nowadays the Shirvan khanate territory makes a part of Azerbaijan.

  • Russian SAM revokes fatwa on permissibility of polygamy among Muslims

    The Russian General Prosecutor's Office (GPO) has made a submission to the Chairman of the Russia Spiritual Administration of Muslims (SAM) on the need to eliminate violations of the law in connection with the fatwa on the permissibility of polygamy. Citing this submission and the reaction of the public, the SAM has revoked the fatwa.
