In Azerbaijan, court arrests journalist Arshad Ibragimov

In the Azerbaijani city of Ganja (Gandzha), the court has arrested journalist Arshad Ibragimov, who is accused of fraud. This was reported by Kyamran Gashimli, an uncle of Arshad Ibragimov.

On Wednesday, the Nizami District Court of Ganja has pronounced the pre-trial restriction measure to Arshad Ibragimov in the form of arrest for three months. Kyamran Gashimli has told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that Arshad Ibragimov is being prosecuted because of his journalistic activities.

"My nephew has been first subjected to pressure after he had disseminated in the media video material of the unlawful actions of the head of the department of education of the Kelbajar District. Arshad has revealed that the official issued fake diplomas of the Ganja Branch of the Teachers Institute," Kyamran Gashimli states.

According to him, the official was involved in the investigation, but was not taken into custody. After that, he filed a complaint to the police that Arshad Ibragimov was allegedly extorting from him about 37,500 US dollars for the refusal to publish the materials discreditable for the former head of the district department of education. This was reported by Kyamran Gashimli.

In this regard, the Nizami district police station has instituted a criminal case against Arshad Ibragimov.

Arshad Ibragimov used to collaborate with a number of the Azerbaijani media, including the opposition newspaper "Azadlyg".
