Abkhazian opposition announces Interim People's Council
The Coordinating Council of oppositional political forces of Abkhazia has announced, at a rally of the opposition, the formation of the Interim People's Council, comprising notable politicians and public figures of the republic.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that after the anti-government rally on May 27 in Sukhumi, demanding the resignation of President Alexander Ankvab and the government, the opposition announced that they took the control over Abkhazia. Ankvab treated the incident as an attempt of a coup d'etat. In the evening on May 29, the opposition announced the formation of a coalition government.
As stated at the rally by Shamil Ardzinba, one of the oppositional leaders, the Interim People's Council comprises 21 persons, including Raul Khajimba, the chairman of the "Forum of People's Unity of Abkhazia" Party; his deputy Daur Arshba; Vitaly Gabniya, the chairman of public organization of veterans "Aruaa"; and Beslan Butba, the chairman of the Party for Economic Development of Abkhazia.
Meanwhile, in the evening on May 29, the Abkhazian Parliament offered the President to resign. The MPs also expressed a vote of non-confidence to the Prime Minister.
