War Prize competition continues
Human rights defenders, activists of the antiwar movement and journalists have already nominated about a dozen of candidates for the War Prize (Editor's note: The War Prize action is announced by the Institute for Social Development of Timur Aliyev). TV journalist Mikhail Leontiev was named as a pretender the first. Yevgeny Ikhlov, a Russian human rights activist of the Movement for Human Rights, thinks that Leontiev emotionally appealed to start the second Chechen war in September 1999, emotionally insists on its continuation "till final victory" now, and baits human rights defenders opposed to the war. Ruslan Badalov, a Chechen human rights defender, nominated Sergey Yastrzhembsky. Petersburg journalist Elena Melnikova proposed US President George Bush. Outstanding human rights activist Elena Boner, widow of Academician Andrey Sakharov, holds Vladimir Putin is in fault for the Chechen war on the Russian part, and Akhmat Kadyrov is in fault for it on the Chechen part.
