Three soldiers from Georgia lost in Afghanistan
Three soldiers from Georgia were killed, and 20 others were wounded in the Afghan province of Helmand in a terrorists' attack on the military base, said today Irakli Alasaniya, the Georgian Defence Minister.
According to the minister, the attack on the base of the 42nd Battalion was undertaken today at 4:17 p.m. local time. Soldiers of the 42nd Battalion arrived in Afghanistan in early April.
"The base faced a combined attack of rebels with the use of an explosive device mounted on a truck. Georgian troops repelled the attack; all the terrorists were liquidated on the spot; and by this time the operative situation is under full control. I want to state with great regret that as a result of the attack three Georgian soldiers were killed: Corporal Alexander Kvitsinadze, Junior Sergeant Zviad Davitadze and Corporal Vladimir Shanava," the "Georgia-Online" quotes the Defence Minister Irakli Alasaniya as saying today.
According to the minister, about 20 servicemen more received wounds of various gravity.
The basis is now under exceptional security measures; the situation is completely under the control of Georgian militaries, The RBC has reported today, citing the statement of Irakli Alasaniya.
