Barsegyan: children died in Gyumri training ground because of absence of fencing
The territory of the training ground of the 102nd Russian Military Base in Gyumri, where a blast of ammunition killed two children, has no fencing and no warning signs. This was stated by Levon Barsegyan, the chairman of the Gyumri Journalists' Club "Asparez", who added that the access to the ground is open to outsiders, and the ground itself is full of unexploded ordnance.
On April 7, near the village of Vagramaberd in the Shirak Region, in the territory of the military unit, two children were killed by a landmine explosion. It happened in the territory of the Russian tank training ground.
"I personally went to the place and saw no signs or trenches... I met no obstacles, no barbed wire. It's obvious that the area has never had any fencing," the Еpress.am quotes Mr Barsegyan as saying.
According to Levon Barsegyan, the children were herding sheep with the father of one of them at the military training ground.
The absence of proper security measures at the training ground is confirmed by the commentator of the "Caucasian Knot" Neobedouin. "It's quite easy to get into the territory of the former military base, nothing to be surprised of... Just recently I saw a relatively new photo of my friend… embracing a land mine," he wrote commenting on the death of the children.
Representatives of the military unit claim that the training ground is fenced; and the children blew up while trying to collect scrap metal.
