Women of Armenia and Georgia are passive to their status in the society, participants of gender seminar assert

The enhancement of the role of women in public life, economy, in elimination of discriminatory practices is hampered by traditional stereotypes and the passivity of women themselves. This was stated by the participants of the seminar held in Yerevan for businesswomen and youth of Armenia and Georgia.

The three-day seminar was held within the joint regional program "Enhancing political empowerment of women and youth in Georgia and Armenia". According to Valery Lim, who represents the Association "DEA", the aim of the project is the active involvement of women in the political processes of the country.

According to his story, the Georgian woman is perceived in the family solely as mother, who should bear and raise children. Moreover, women themselves are very passive to their status in the society. He cited the example of the Georgian parliament, where only 13 percent are women. In local government bodies of Zugdidi one woman falls on 40 men.

Georgy Kadzhaya from the same association has noted that, despite some similarities of women's issues in Armenia and Georgia, Armenian women are more motivated and persistent, and "therefore we chose Armenia as our partner for this project in order to borrow their positive experiences."
