In May, 164 persons fell victim to armed conflict in Northern Caucasus

At least 164 persons fall victim to the armed conflict in Northern Caucasus in May 2012. Of these, 50 persons were killed and 114 wounded. These are the results of calculations made by the "Caucasian Knot" based on its own materials and information from open sources.

For the last month, Dagestan became the deadliest region: there, at least 144 persons suffered, including 40 casualties and 104 wounded.

17 officers from law enforcement agencies and other power bodies perished. 21 persons, suspected of involvement in the armed underground, were killed. Besides, two civilians perished, who fell random victims to the double terror act committed on May 3 in Makhachkala.

Total number of wounded persons reached at least 104, including law enforcement officers and civilians.

One should understand that the above statistics cannot reflect with absolute accuracy the number of victims in each of the identified categories of the survey. Not all the data get into news reports. It is not always possible to verify the reliability of statements made by law enforcement bodies.

In Chechnya, 10 persons suffered, including 6 deceased and 4 wounded. 6 suspected militants were killed in the Urus-Martan, Achkhoi-Martan and Grozny Districts, and in the city of Grozny.

4 civilians were wounded: 2 of them were wounded in Grozny in explosion of the improvised explosive device (IED) planted in a mobile phone, and 2 other civilians fell random victims to shootings at the elimination of a militant in the Chechen capital.

In Kabardino-Balkaria, 5 persons suffered, 2 of them were killed and 3 wounded. The number of deceased persons included Zhamal Gemuev, the head of the Tyrnyauz administration and one suspected militant, killed during a special operation.

3 civilians were wounded Khasan Sizhaev, the head of the Baksan District administration, a former police officer, and his driver.

In Ingushetia, 4 persons suffered 2 persons were killed and two wounded. 1 law enforcement agent perished: an explosive device blew up an officer, who was called to demine it. 1 suspected militant was killed. 1 staff member of the FSB Special Forces and 1 civilian were wounded.

In the Stavropol Territory, in the city of Neftekumsk, Aslan Rizvanov, the local religious figure, was wounded as a result of armed attack.

  • Two natives of Northern Caucasus injured in shootout near “Wildberries” office in Moscow

    A shootout took place near an office of the “Wildberries” Company in the centre of Moscow. As a result, at least one person has been killed and several others have been wounded, sources report. Among the victims have been Abubakar Mestoev and Umar Chichaev, mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters from Northern Caucasus, reports Shamil Khadulaev, the chair of the Public Oversight Commission (POC) of Dagestan.

  • In Volgograd, court recognizes absence of HIV therapy in prison hospital

    The Central District Court of Volgograd awarded prisoner Ruslan Mitrofan compensation in the amount of 1000 roubles, recognizing that the administration of a prison hospital in Volgograd violated the prisoner’s right to receive medical care by not providing him with an HIV medicine.
