Collection of signatures for construction of a memorial to a victim of road accident with the participation of ex-deputy Ostrovenko is going in Rostov-on-Don
On June, 10, organizers of a picket in memory of student Igor Verbenko who perished in a road accident with the participation of Deputy of the city Duma Ostrovenko in Rostov-on-Don collected about 400 signatures.
It should be reminded that on June, 10, 2011, the Deputy's "Porsche" driven at a high speed collided with Igor Verbenko's "VAZ-2106" at a traffic light. The twenty-three-years-old student died on-site. On June, 11, 2011, the court sanctioned Ostrovenko's arrest for suspicion of committing the road accident in a drunken state resulting in a person's death. On May, 14, this year, the ex-deputy was sentenced to 4 years and 8 months of imprisonment in a penal colony settlement. The court also obliged him to pay one million rubles compensation for moral damage to the lost student's mother.
A group of civil activists was collecting signatures for construction of a memorial to Verbenko for two hours, from 10:00 till 12:00. Not long before the end of the picket Igor Verbenko's family and friends arrived at the site of the tragedy. They laid flowers at a symbolic memorial made yet a year before from an advertising structure placed nearby.
According to Vladimir Prokopenko, organizer of signature collection, the lists with signatures will be later attached to a the folder of documents to be referred to Mayor's office. The final decision on setting any commemorative token will be taken by the Administration of Rostov-on-Don, 161.ru web-portal reports.
The picket was held near the building of Musical Theatre in Bolshaya Sadovaya street. The action was authorized by the municipal authorities, "Yuzhny Region" ("South Region") web-portal reports.
Earlier, the "Caucasian Knot" informed that four appeals against the sentence to Dmitry Ostrovenko were submitted to Kirov district court of Rostov-on-Don: from the sufferer, the defendant, his attorneys and Public prosecutor's office.
