Georgian Parliament approves amendments to Law "On Political Unions of Citizens"
On May 8, at the plenary session, the Parliament of Georgia unanimously adopted in the third reading the amendments to the Law "On Political Unions of Citizens". More than 102 MPs supported the amendments.
"The main purpose of the Law will remain unchanged: the funding of parties should be transparent, and the very Law on political parties should be equal for all, limiting the receipt of illegal funding. The developed draft of amendments is aimed at eliminating vague wordings in the Law," said Pavle Kublashvili, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee of the Parliament.
The adopted amendments clearly stipulate the concept of "a person associated with a party", the Law allows political parties to take loans, and it clearly specifies the description of activity of the Chamber of Control; the Law regulates the procedure of imposition of arrest on property. Besides, it imposes restrictions on donations to political parties from the same source and provides for public financing of political TV advertising for political parties that have overcome the electoral threshold at the recent election.
