The family of deceased convict in Georgia demands inquiry on the cause of his death
Zurab Delianidze aged 39 died in hospital of Gland prison of Tbilisi. According to the official version, the convict who was serving a six-years term of imprisonment for storage of drugs died from a serious disease, however, his people dispute this version. Delianidze’s wife Ketino Beridze states that her husband was quite healthy. She also said that the officials of the correctional facility informed her about her husband’s death too late.
Besides, according to Delianidze’s relatives, there are signs of torture on the convict’s body. They are currently demanding independent examination of the body, radio “Echo of the Caucasus” reports.
The Apparat of People’s Defender of Georgia got interested in the case and is now studying the circumstances.
The Ministry of Execution of Punishments has already commented on the situation. According to an official statement of the Ministry, the convict died as a result of a serious disease. An official of the Ministry said that all possible measures were taken to save his life. The Ministry acknowledges signs on his body but considers that it “might be traces of edemas that appeared already after death”. An inspection on the accident is currently in process, “Georgia Online” reports.
