President of Armenia orders to dismantle kiosks in Mashtots Park
President Serzh Sargsyan has visited - together with the Yerevan Mayor Taron Margaryan - the Mashtots Park, where for more than two months ecologists-activists have been fighting against the build-up of the park. After reviewing the situation, the head of the country instructed the Mayor of Yerevan to immediately dismantle the kiosks.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that seven defenders of the Mashtots Park were detained on April 29 when they tried to dismantle the kiosks brought there from Abovyan Street. The activists were released three hours later; they returned to the park and announced the continuation of their protests against the installed kiosks.
The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports that prior to the president's visit activists believed that the authorities would dismantle the kiosks after the parliamentary elections to be held on May 6, but now, in their opinion, the kiosks may be removed even earlier.
On April 30, the environmental activists organized a march along the central streets of the capital of Armenia and encouraged people to join the fight against the illegal, in their opinion, construction in the public park.
