Hrant Dink's family demands new inquiry

Lawyers of the family members of Hrant Dink, the editor of the Turkish-Armenian newspaper "Agos", appealed to the General Prosecutor's Office in Istanbul, demanding to initiate a new investigation to clarify the unexplored details.

Hrant Dink was shot dead in Istanbul on January 19, 2007. Hrant Dink wrote about the Armenian genocide in Turkey in 1915. About 20 people faced trial. In July 2011, the Turkish court sentenced Ogun Samast, the direct perpetrator of the crime, to 21 years and 10 months of imprisonment. On January 17, 2012, the Turkish court sentenced to life imprisonment two other persons, accused of involvement into the assassination.

The reason for appeal to the Prosecutor's Office on March 23 was the publication of the report of the State Supervisory Board of Turkey. The 650-page document points out the negligence shown by officials in the course of the investigation into the assassination and the fact that those officials remain unpunished, the "Tert.am" reports.

In particular, the report states that in the course of the investigation into the assassination, to find evidence against an institution, officials contacted the very institution.

The lawyers of the Hrant Dink's family members insist that because of those reasons, the investigation into the assassination and the involvement of new suspects faced obstacles, the "Panarmenian.net" reports.

The relatives of Hrant Dink also expressed their indignation at the fact that on March 19, the police officer, who was photographed with Ogun Samast, was promoted to the higher position, the "Armenian Information" reports.
