Charity campaign in Chechnya gathered thousands of books for prisoners

In Chechnya, several thousand books were gathered within a charity campaign to help prisoners. The books will be sent to correctional institutions of the republic, said a source from the Committee for Youth Matters of the Chechen Government.

"The campaign has collected thousands of books ranging from fiction stories to special manuals. Most of the books were brought by elderly people; or they sent their children and grandchildren with books," said the above Committee, which had initiated the campaign.

The source has noted that people continued bringing books also after March 10. "Some local residents learned about the campaign from their friends or neighbours and brought books after the end of the action. I must say that, despite the two recent military campaigns, many people still preserve their old libraries, as in Soviet time our republic was considered one of the most abound in readers," he has stressed.
