North Ossetia: in 2011, 14 persons fell victim to armed conflict

In 2011, at least 14 persons fell victim to the armed conflict in North Ossetia, of them 4 persons were killed and 10 more injured. The figure is much lower than in 2010, when there were 195 victims, the reason is in the absence of terror acts. These are the results of calculations of the "Caucasian Knot", based on the data from its own correspondents and information from open sources.

Explosions and terror acts

In 2011, North Ossetia registered two explosions of so to say "non-domestic" nature. On October 4, 2011, in the village of Elkhotove, unidentified persons threw a grenade into the reconstructed mosque; nobody was hurt by the explosion. On June 16 in Vladikavkaz, a bomb-like object was blown up; it was extracted by a police robot from under a car, parked in a residential district of the city. Nobody suffered.

In 2010, the republic saw two suicide bombings and at least three explosions.

In 2010, one of the most resonant Russian terror acts was committed on September 9 in Vladikavkaz, near the Central Marketplace, where a passenger car was blown up. The bomb was triggered by a suicide bomber, who was in the car. Apart from him, 19 persons were lost: 14 - on the spot, and 5 more – later. The total number of victims exceeded 160 persons. The second explosion, committed by a suicide bomber, occurred on August 17 in the Prigorodny District – a man blew himself up near a militia post on the border of North Ossetia with Ingushetia. The explosion killed two policemen and wounded three others.

In the course of those terror acts and three other explosions, 24 persons were killed and 166 others wounded.

Losses among power agents and members of armed underground

In North Ossetia, in 2011, one member of the armed underground was killed, namely, David Murashev, the supposed killer of the poet Shamil Djigkaev, the dean of the department of the Ossetian philology of the North-Ossetian State University. Murashev was killed on May 31, as reported by power agents, while rendering resistance to law enforcers. In 2011, according to law enforcers, there were no detentions of persons involved in the armed underground.

Last year in North Ossetia, at least 5 persons were injured (no casualties) from among employees of power bodies, who took part in special operations.

Three policemen were wounded on May 31 during a special operation to detain David Murashev; and two others were wounded during a special operation in the Alagir District aimed to detain a suspect of committing an especially serious crime.

As a result of armed clashes and special operations, which became known in 2010, as well as explosions and terror acts, two suicide bombers and two policemen were lost. The list of those wounded in 2010 included four local power agents.

Thus, in 2011 as compared with 2010, the number of liquidated members of the armed underground decreased from 2 to 1. The total number of victims among law enforcers also went down from 6 to 5 persons.

Victims among civilians

Civilians also fall victim of the conflict, in 2011 in North Ossetia there were at least eight of them, including five wounded and three killed persons.

The list of lost civilians includes the national poet of North Ossetia Shamil Djigkaev, the dean of the philology department of the North-Ossetian State University named after Costa Khetagurov, whose body with chopped wounds in the neck was found on May 26 near the village of Redant, a 16-year-old son of a police colonel, who was found assassinated in their apartment in Mozdok in the evening on October 7, and Vadim Djioev, the owner of the restaurant "Regakh", who was killed on December 20, when his car was shelled in Vladikavkaz.

In 2010, the count of victims among civilians made 20 casualties and 167 wounded persons, mostly as a result of two terror acts.

The number of victims in North Ossetia went down because of absence of terror acts

If we compare the total number of victims of the armed conflict in North Ossetia in 2010, namely, 195 persons: 24 casualties and 171 wounded persons, with the data for 2011 – 14 victims, including 4 casualties and 10 wounded persons, a significant improvement of the situation in the republic becomes apparent, which was mainly due to the absence of terror acts in 2011.
