A veteran of the war in Afghanistan in Rostov-on-Don went on an open-ended hunger strike near the building of Plenipotentiary mission in SFO

Georgy Sadovich, veteran of the war in Afghanistan, came out on a single-person picket declaring a hunger strike near the building of the President's Plenipotentiary mission in Southern Federal Okrug (SFO). The picketer demands to provide him with dwelling which, according to him, is due to him by law.

Georgy Sadovich has been on a hunger strike for already over three days. He says that he has been on the waiting list for getting dwelling since 1991 and he has a family of four members. Sadovich has now a municipal dwelling support in form of a certificate of one million rubles.

However, the veteran states that this money is not enough to buy a flat for a family of four persons. He wants to consolidate federal, regional and municipal subsidies of his own and his wife who is a medic, "Rostov News Agency" reports.

In the Ministry of Construction, Architecture and Territorial Development Sadovich was explained that he had a right of federal subsidy but he could not get it in 2011. The reason is that the veterans of Afghanistan who are on the waiting list since 1987 are currently receiving money from the budget while Sadovich is on the list since 1991.

The officials offer him an alternative. "We can solve the problem now by realizing municipal subsidy with the addition of financing the percentage. During the first three years two thirds of the percentage will be repaid at the expense of regional budget funds which makes on the average 10 to 15 thousand rubles a month", Agency of Business Information "Yuzhny Region" quotes Ludmila Zykova, Head of Department of implementation of dwelling programs of the Ministry of Construction, Architecture and Territorial Development.

Earlier, this February, ten "Afghans" who had been on the dwelling waiting list for already 20 years held a hunger strike at the entrance of Gorky park. One of the participants of the action of February Revaz Khuchua expressed solidarity with Georgy Sadovich who is on a hunger strike today but could not take part in the picket for health reasons, "Yuzhny Region" reports.

Georgy Sadovich also became one of the organizers of veterans' pickets which passed off in Rostov-on-Don on November, 4 and 5, "Nashe Vremya" newspaper reports.

Earlier, the "Caucasian Knot" also informed that on January, 30, 2009, about 50 "Afghans" gathered at a picket in Rostov-on-Don demanding to allot them land parcels for private housing construction.

It should be reminded that about one and a half thousand people in Rostov region all in all were acknowledged as needing lodging allowances.
