The ruling party and opposition of Georgia reached an agreement of making no changes to the number of parliamentarians

The number of deputies of the Parliament in Georgia will not be increased from 150 to 190 persons. This decision was taken during negotiations between representatives of the ruling party “United National Movement” and five oppositional parties.

The conference was held on the initiative of David Bakradze, Chairman of the Georgian Parliament. National Democratic Party, “The New Rights”, “Industry will Save Georgia”, Christian-democratic movement and the Democratic party of Georgia took part in the negotiations.

According to the suggested amendments to the Constitution signed by 83 deputies of the Georgian Parliament, it was planned to increase the number of deputies to 190. It was suggested to elect 107 of them by proportional election system and 83 by majoritarian one.

After the plenary session of the Parliament on December, 6, representatives of “Christian-democratic” faction declared revocation of their signatures under the agreement of amendments. The reason was a severe attack of the opposition the party underwent.

On December, 19, Speaker of the superior legislative body of the country called for holding consultations. As a result of two-hour negotiations an agreement of leaving the prior number of deputies in the Parliament with a change of their proportion was achieved.

The question of the number of deputies in the Parliament of Georgia caused a lot of debates. Part of the politicians consider that a referendum is necessary because the decision to reduce the number of elected representatives was taken by the citizens, others state that the parliament has a right to solve the problem independently.
