Azerbaijani SC leaves Jabbar Savalan in custody
Today, the Supreme Court (SC) of Azerbaijan held consideration, under chairmanship of Imran Gadjigaibov, of the cassation appeal, lodged by Jabbar Savalan, a convicted young activist of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA).
The young man asked the SC to acquit him and release from custody. However, the Court has upheld the decisions of the previous judicial instances.
After a short deliberation that lasted about 10 minutes, the judge announced that the verdict against Savalan remain in effect without changes.
Jabbar's relatives and supporters, who were present in the courtroom, took the decision with outrage and began chanting "Freedom!" The spontaneous protest action continued in front of the courthouse. With slogans chanted out, the supporters of the convict made a short march; there was no police interference.
