Armenia: NGOs to hold actions against violence on women

Armenian activists have scheduled to hold, in the period from November 25 to December 10, a series of actions under the slogan "Against violence on women in family". November 25 is the International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women.

The actions will begin on that day with a march in Yerevan under the slogan "Stop withstanding violence!", which will start from Teryan Street and end in Northern Avenue. The main objective of the event is to inform the public about the existence of the problem of violence against women and to try to prevent further incidents, the IA "News-Armenia" reports.

Within the series of actions initiated by the organization "Society Without Violence", "Women's Rights Centre" and "Women's Resource Centre", in Northern Avenue a huge poster will be installed, the so-called "Wall of Shame" depicting scenes of violence. Anyone will be able to express his or her attitude to the phenomenon on a piece of paper and stick it to the poster. The organizers expect to completely cover the poster with messages and comments of passers-by. Booklets and leaflets on the topic will be distributed during the action, the "Panorama.am" reports.

According to the "Women's Rights Centre", out of the four main types of domestic violence – physical, psychological, sexual and economic – women in Armenia most often complain of beatings by their husbands.
