Committee for restoration of rights of victims of political repression created in Karachay-Cherkessia

The People's Assembly of Karachay-Cherkessia formed a republican Committee for restoration of rights of rehabilitated victims of political repression. It will deal with publishing a Book of Memory and construction of a memorial complex in honour of the lost people.

"The Committee's major goal is to restore and maintain memory of the victims of political repression in Karachay-Cherkessia beginning from 1917 and publishing a Book of Memory. The plans of the Committee also include construction of a memorial to the victims of political repression for there is still no complex of this kind in the republic", Elena Butova, representative of the People's Assembly of KCR, said to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

The representative of the Parliament emphasized that "only individuals, not peoples on the whole, are meant". "We make no differences along ethnic or other lines, the main task is to collect complete information on all the victims of political repression and we are already making the respective inquiries", she added.

The Committee includes 13 persons: representatives of the Parliament and the Government of the republic, Committee of archives affairs, Public prosecutor's office, Federal Security Service and the Ministry of Interior Affairs. "All the institutions which have ever come across victims of political repression are represented in the Committee", Butova explained.
