In Rostov, soldier and his mother sentenced for spying for Georgia

Today, in Rostov-on-Don, the North-Caucasian District Military Court (NCDMC) convicted a soldier of a military unit of the Southern Military District and his mother of espionage for Georgia and sentenced them to 10 and 8 years of imprisonment.

The "Caucasian Knot" reported that Senior Lieutenant David Aliev and his mother Irina Alieva had been detained in January 2011. According to the investigators, Aliev collected secret information about the troops in the district and passed it on to his mother, a Russian citizen, domiciled in Georgia, who was an intermediary from the Georgian side.

According to the verdict, the soldier and his mother named Aliev were found guilty under Article 275 of the Criminal Code of Russia (treason). The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent learnt about it from Alyona Zhitnik, Press Secretary of the NCDMC.

"David Aliev was sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment to serve his term in a penal colony of high security. Besides, he was also deprived of his military rank of 'Senior Lieutenant'. Irina Alieva, his mother, was sentenced to eight years of imprisonment in a penal colony of general regime," Alyona Zhitnik reported on the court decision.

Let us remind you that, according to the representative of the Investigatory Department of the FSB for the South-Eastern District, in the course of the investigation the detainees confessed that they had been recruited by Georgian secret services and agreed to carry out their tasks for remuneration, which, according to the prosecutors, amounted to about 5000 US dollars.

Earlier, the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) refused to comment on information about the detention of the officer David Aliev on suspicion of espionage for Georgia. "We will no comment on this issue," the Georgian MIA stated.
