Armed conflict in Northern Caucasus: 1005 victims from start of year

Since the beginning of 2011, at least 1005 persons fell victim of the ongoing armed conflict in Northern Caucasus, including 594 casualties and 411 injured persons. These are the results of calculations made by the "Caucasian Knot" based on its own materials and information from open sources.

With account of the data of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Dagestan, the "Caucasian Knot" is publishing the updated results of calculations. The absolute leadership in Northern Caucasus by the number of victims - 539 persons - belongs to Dagestan, which preserved its leadership by the total number of victims in the first half of 2011. In 2011, this republic lost 314 persons and had 225 citizens wounded.

With account of the data of the Committee of Inquiry of Russia, the "Caucasian Knot" is publishing the updated results of calculations. Chechnya takes the second place with its 182 victims of the armed conflict of power agents and the underground, including 83 casualties and 99 wounded persons; while Kabardino-Balkaria keeps the third place with its 137 victims, including 98 casualties and 39 wounded persons.

Then - in descending order - we see Ingushetia (97 victims: 65 casualties and 32 wounded persons), North Ossetia (24 victims: 18 and 6, accordingly), Karachay-Cherkessia (16: 12 and 4) and Stavropol Territory (10: 4 and 6).

Loss of power agents and underground members

According to law enforcement bodies, in 2011, losses of the armed underground in Northern Caucasus amounted to 314 persons, lost as a result of self-explosions of suicide bombers and liquidated by power agents' actions, aimed at combating the armed underground. Out of these 314 persons, 138 people were lost in Dagestan, 66 - in Kabardino-Balkaria, 37 - in Ingushetia, 53 - in Chechnya, 15 - in North Ossetia and 5 - in Karachay-Cherkessia.

Besides, 276 persons, accused of involvement in or helping the armed underground, according to information of power agents, were detained and pled guilty. Of these, 121 persons - in Chechnya, 63 - in Kabardino-Balkaria, 72 - in Dagestan, 14 - in Ingushetia, 4 - in Karachay-Cherkessia and 2 - in the Stavropol Territory.

In 2011, the law enforcement bodies of Northern Caucasus have lost in total - as a result of attacks, bombings, armed clashes and direct attacks - 142 employees, including 78 employees in Dagestan, 21 - in Kabardino-Balkaria, 18 - in Chechnya, 19 - in Ingushetia, 4 - in Karachay-Cherkessia and one in North Ossetia and Stavropol Territory each.

Other 291 power agents were wounded, among them 133 - in Dagestan, 90 - in Chechnya, 29 - in Kabardino-Balkaria, 24 - in Ingushetia, 6 - in North Ossetia, 4 - in Karachay-Cherkessia and 5 - in the Stavropol Territory.

Civilian victims

Confrontation of power agents and the armed underground is directly affecting the civilian population of Northern Caucasus; the statistics of victims among civilians is a confirmation.

Since the beginning of 2011, Northern Caucasus has lost - as a result of attacks, bombings, shootings and assassinations - at least 136 civilians: 99 persons in Dagestan, 12 in Chechnya, 10 - in Kabardino-Balkaria and Ingushetia each, 3 - in Karachay-Cherkessia and 2 - in Stavropol Territory.

At least 116 civilians were injured, including 92 persons in Dagestan, 9 - in Chechnya and Kabardino-Balkaria each, 4 - in Ingushetia and 2 - in North Ossetia.

In 2011, the regions of Northern Caucasus have also continued registering abductions, disappearances, and unlawful detentions. In total, at least 45 such cases were registered in the region, of which 18 occurred in Dagestan and Chechnya each, 9 - in Ingushetia and one - in Kabardino-Balkaria.

  • Two natives of Northern Caucasus injured in shootout near “Wildberries” office in Moscow

    A shootout took place near an office of the “Wildberries” Company in the centre of Moscow. As a result, at least one person has been killed and several others have been wounded, sources report.
