In Dagestan, motor traffic through Gimry Tunnel to be completely stopped on August 3

On August 3, the tunnel "Gimry-Chirkata" will be completely closed for the passage of vehicles and the construction works will be started in it. This was reported today by Rizvan Gazimagomedov, Deputy Prime Minister of Dagestan. He addressed residents of the nearby districts asking not to organize protests in that connection.

On July 25 the period of the temporary passage through the tunnel has expired; however, taking into account that on August 1 the month of Ramadan has started in Dagestan and many people went to their relatives to the mountainous districts, the authorities decided to extend the passage period to August 3.

"The previous general contractor for the tunnel construction had not met the expectations; thus, a new tender was to be conducted. It was won by the Company "Mostotryad-99", which had a great experience in the construction of bridges and tunnels," said Mr Gazimagomedov.

Referring to the fact whether it would be possible to carry out the tunnel reconstruction and to ensure passage of vehicles through the tunnel at the same time, Mr Gazimagomedov replied that it was impossible. Zagid Khuchbarov, Managing Director of the Company "Mostotryad-99", supported the Deputy Prime Minister.

"We will bring all strengths to the reconstruction of the tunnel, and it will be ready before the end of 2012," assured Mr Khuchbarov.

Rizvan Gazimagomedov confirmed that the residents of seven mountainous districts actually faced obstacles and had to go to the republic's low-lying districts indirectly.

"We ask for understanding. Nobody will allow passing along the unfinished federal facility. I urge not to be led by provocateurs, not to make protests, but to stand for another year," the Deputy Prime Minister addressed the people.
