Russia offers Azerbaijan to modernize Gabala Radar Station

Russia intends to continue operating the Gabala Radar Station, which term of lease by the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation expires in 2012. The issue on the lease renewal was discussed in Baku during the negotiations of Defence Ministers of Russia and Azerbaijan – Anatoly Serdyukov and Safar Abiev.

The Defence Ministry of Azerbaijan reported that during the meeting of Azerbaijani and Russian Defence Ministers the sides discussed issues on the military-technical cooperation and its prospects, the use of the Gabala Radar Station, the military-political situation in the region, including Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

According to Mr Serdyukov, the Russian side has prepared proposals for the further use of the Gabala Radar Station and will form a working group that will arrive in Baku in the coming days and during two weeks together with the Azerbaijani side will go into the technical issues on the further exploitation of the Gabala Radar Station.

Mr Serdyukov said that after August 15 he and Mr Abiev would discuss in detail each item of the new agreement on the use of the Gabala Radar Station.
