Dagestan: at least 353 persons lost and injured during the first half of 2011

At least 203 lost and 150 injured from January 1 to June 30, 2011, – this is the sad statistics of the ongoing armed conflict in Dagestan. These figures are based on the calculations of the "Caucasian Knot" materials and information from open sources.

During the first six months of 2011 at least 61 armed conflicts occurred in Dagestan: this figure includes special operations, shelling of power agents and civilians and fire fights between law enforcement agents and members of the armed underground, including 18 announcements of the legal regime of the counterterrorist operation (CTO).

With account of the data of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Dagestan, the "Caucasian Knot" is publishing the updated results of calculations.

Besides, in Dagestan in January-June 2011 46 explosions and terror acts occurred, in which 26 people, including 3 power agents, six members of the armed underground and 17 civilians were killed. 64 people, including 30 power agents and 24 civilians, were injured. Number of terrorist acts includes three suicide bombings, in which seven people in total were lost, including 3 power agents, four suicide bombers. 30 people, including 28 power agents and 2 civilians, were injured.

Casualties among civilians

In January-June 2011, kidnappings of Dagestani residents continued. 15 cases of kidnappings were registered, two kidnapped were later found dead, six kidnapped were known to be alive, and the fate of others has not been reported yet.

Civilians continue to become victims of armed confrontation and terror acts in Dagestan. 49 local residents were injured, 51 people were lost at shelling attacks, fire fights between power agents and militants, and explosions.

Losses of power agents and suspected militants

As a result of armed confrontation in Dagestan from January 1 to June 30, 2011, 56 power agents perished and at least 101 – injured.

Let us note that on June 27 Rashid Nurgaliev, Minister of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, said at the operational assembly with the leaders of the Main Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) for the North Caucasus Federal District (NCFD) and the MIA in Dagestan, held in Makhachkala city that since the beginning of 2011 40 police officers of the republic perished and 74 were injured.

One of the greatest losses was suffered by power agents in the course of a special operation conducted in the large forest in the Kizlyar District of the republic, near the village of Kuznetsovka, where on June 21 a group of militants was blocked. At night on June 22, the militants tried to break through the cordon. The federal forces made use of heavy armoured machinery and helicopters. On June 24, the militants managed to finally rush out of the cordon under the guise of a deceptive manoeuvre. In total, during the special operation in the forests of the Kizlyar District, five power agents were lost and 13 more - wounded.

Within the first six months of 2011, a total of 96 supposed militants and their helpers were killed; and 49 more members of the armed underground were detained. It should be noted here that these figures may change after clarification of the details of those cases, when detainees' relatives asserted that accusations of participating in illegal armed formations (IAFs) were put forward illegitimately.

At the same time, according to the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Russia, during the same period, 100 IAF members were killed, and 120 more were detained or voluntarily surrendered.

Besides, the authorities of Dagestan reported deaths of a number of key figures of the armed underground.

On January 27, in a special operation in the outskirt of Khasavyurt, Adam Guseinov, 32, Deputy Amir of Dagestan, the second by his influence in the hierarchy of Dagestani armed underground, was killed.

On April 1, in the course of a skirmish with power agents in the Buinaksk pass, in the territory of the Kumtorkalin District, Yakhya Aslanov, the leader of the local grouping of militants, was killed; and on April 11, Suleiman Magomedov, the leader of the Tsuntin grouping, was liquidated.

On April 18, a skirmish in the Levashin District resulted in death of Israpil Validjanov, 42, also known as Amir Khasan. He became the leader of Dagestani militants in August 2010, after the death of Magomedali Vagabov.

On April 20, in Makhachkala, Sabitbai (Sabitbi) Amanov was blocked and killed. Amanov was a collaborator of Said Buryatskiy, the militants' ideologist, who had been killed earlier, and the main explosion specialist in the ranks of the Dagestani underground. After the death in December 2010 of Amir of Makhachkala Magomed Sheikhov, Amanov was in fact the leader of the Makhachkala subversive-terrorist grouping.

On April 25, in the course of a counterterrorist operation (CTO) in the Tsumadin District, two militants were killed; one of them was identified as Gadjiyav Gadziev, the leader of the "mountain sector" of the armed underground.

On June 10, policemen killed three persons in the Karabudakhkent District, who rendered resistance, when policemen tried to examine their car. One of the casualties was identified as Kamil Magomedov, the leader of the Izberbash subversive-terrorist grouping. On June 14, as a result of a special operation in Kaspiisk, Rustam Radjabov, the leader of the local subversive-terrorist grouping, was killed.
