520 convicts amnestied in Armenia

As of July, 9, 767 persons were granted an amnesty in Armenia, Press service of Criminal executive department of the Ministry of Justice reported.

Amnesty was announced in the republic on May, 29, by National Assembly, on the proposal of President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan in connection with the 20th anniversary of the republic’s independence.

520 convicts have already been released under the amnesty and custody terms of 247 convicts were reduced, “Novosti-Armenia” reports.

Representatives of the Armenian opposition are also among those amnestied, in particular, ex-deputy of Armenian Parliament Sasun Mikhaelyan and editor-in-chief of the newspaper “Aikakan Zhamanak” (”Armenian Times”) Nicol Pashinyan convicted on the case of mass disturbances in March, 2008.

The whole procedure will be accomplished by September, 21, 2011, Independence Day of Armenia, "Hayinfo" reports.
