Adygea: mountain multi-race "Caucasus Adventure Race 2011" has started

More than 120 racers from all over Russia and near abroad arrived at the base camp of the mountain multi-race "Caucasus Adventure Race 2011", which is located on the southern outskirts of the village Khamyshki of the Maikop District of Adygea. The athletes will have to overcome the 240 kilometres in the mountains within two days.

The aim of the race is to promote and develop the dynamic extreme team sport and involve the population into the regular athletics amidst natural environment. The race participants include athletes and amateurs from Volgodonsk, Saratov, Taganrog, Moscow, Maikop, Ekaterinburg, Krasnodar, Nevinnomyssk, Sochi, Volgograd, Novocherkassk, Belgorod, Novouralsk, Astrakhan and Donetsk.

The duration of the race is 48 hours; and the distance is 240 km, including 140 km on a bicycle, 25 km drive down the river, 70 km of tracking (tracking is hiking along a predetermined route), and 5 km across canyons and rope lines. The total vertical drop of the route is 2000 meters; the climb is up to 4000 meters high.

"Initially we had planned a long race," said Maxim Dmitriev, one of the organizers of the multi-race, and continued: "Now there is a trend for sprint races in our country, a tendency of stage races starts, but the so-called 'expedition' races are outdated in Russia. We wanted to fill up this gap."
