European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg conferred a big compensation to residents of Ingushetia

European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg (ECHR) obliged the Russian Government to pay over 130 euro compensation to the residents of Ingushetia beaten up by members of the top brass.

The lawsuit was submitted to ECHR by resident of Ingushetia Bekhan Velkhiev and the family of his lost brother Bashir. In July, 2004, armed and camouflaged people illegally carried out search in their home after which the men were taken away for interrogation.

The plaintiffs state that during the search valuables to a sum of over ten thousand euro were illegally confiscated from them, radio “Svoboda” reports.
During interrogation officers of the Ministry of Interior Affairs demanded that the brothers should bear witness on the attack at Nalchik which had happened not long before.

It follows from the materials of the case that the interrogation was accompanied by tortures with the use of electric current. Bekhan Velkhiev soon collapsed and his brother Bashir died from beating. Numerous signs of torture were found on his body.

ECHR established that in brother Velkhievs’ case the Russian authorities violated several fundamental human rights at once, including the right to life, freedom and safety, besides, they did not carry out proper investigation of the accident, Russian service of BBC reports.
