Azerbaijan: mudflows destroyed houses and HPP

Mudflows generated as a result of rain showers, which started on June 22 in the evening, destroyed the hydroelectric power plant (HPP), which was under construction on the Goychay River in the Ismailli District of Azerbaijan. Water washed away houses, where displaced people lived.

The flow destroyed the HPP, which was under construction for three months already on the Goychay River, flowing through the village of Sumagally. The mudflows destroyed the concrete dam of the hydroelectric station and building materials, which were delivered for construction. The Goychay River channel has changed, and, as a result, the village Sumagally, located approximately 180 kilometres north of the city of Baku, was flooded, the agency "Trend" reported.

According to Rafael Akhmedov, the deputy head of executive authorities of the Ismailli District, and the Chairman of the Emergency Commission the disaster, water washed away 18 houses in the villages of Galadzhyg, Istisu, Chaygovushan, Buynuz and in the residential area of Kokyaltme of the village of Ismailli, where displaced people lived. The families from the destroyed houses were accommodated with their relatives.

At present, the rain shower continues.
