Yerevan: subway fare to be doubled since July 1

Since July 1, subway fare in Yerevan will be doubled. Karen Karapetyan, the Mayor of Yerevan, announced this information.

The new fare rate will comprise 100 drams (0.3 US dollars). However, according to Karen Karapetyan, the travel cost comprises 160 drams (about 0.5 US dollars), and the current rate is provided by the subsidy assistance from the Mayoralty. "We decided to raise fare rates, basing on the fact that the Mayoralty can no longer provide such a subsidy," said Karapetyan.

According to Karen Karapetyan, the Mayoralty plan to reduce the number of above-ground transportation vehicles, in particular, vans, as their city routes coincide with the subway line. In this way the Yerevan authorities hope to reduce traffic jams in the city centre.

The Yerevan only subway line consists of 9 stations located in the central part of the city.
