Armenia: EU and CoE to help Armenia in ensuring freedom of the media

"The European Union (EU) and the Council of Europe (CoE) will help Armenia to reach the European media standards," Leila Dervishagich, an adviser for the CoE's cooperation division, said in Yerevan.

Officially, the two-year-long joint programme of the EU and CoE to promote the media freedom, professionalism and pluralism in Southern Caucasus and Moldova was launched in January 2011. It includes about 20 events, including regional and joint Armenian-Georgian ones.

"The freedoms of speech and information are fundamental for any democratic state," stressed Ms Dervishagich.

She mentioned that the programme also assumes legal assistance both to journalists and authorities of Armenia in bringing the media-regulating legislation in line with European standards. However, the legal assistance will be of exceptionally advisory nature.
