Azerbaijani Court starts considering Jabbar Savalan's appeal

Today, the Sumgait Court of Appeal, chaired by Judge Lyatifa Mamedova, held a preparatory session on the case of Jabbar Savalan, a young activist of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA).

The appeal complaint was filed against the conviction of Savalan on May 4 by the Sumgait City Court to 2.5 years in prison on charges of drug possession.

Jabbar Savalan was not brought to the session; his advocates Asabali Mustafaev and Anar Gasymov made motions to replace his custody for home arrest and hold a re-investigation by the appeal instance.

The court retired for consultations, came back in a few minutes and announced that the motions were dismissed. The hearing on the appeal complaint was scheduled for June 30.
