Rostov: local deputy involved in road accident excluded from "Edinaya Rossiya"

Dmitry Ostrovenko, a deputy of the City Duma of Rostov-on-Don, accused of killing a student Igor Verbenko in a road accident, was expelled from the "Edinaya Rossiya" (United Russia) Party on the following day, said Victor Deryabkin, the secretary of the regional political council of the party.

The road accident with Ostrovenko occurred on June 10. The deputy's Porsche crashed at high speed into three other cars. The driver of one of them, a correspondence student of the Railways University, died immediately. On June 11, the Kirov District Court of Rostov-on-Don sanctioned Dmitry Ostrovenko's arrest on suspicion of committing a road accident with a human death in the condition of alcoholic intoxication.

Vasily Golubev, Governor of the Rostov Region, said that affiliation to a political party is no mandate for offences, and that he, as the governor, would demand Ostrovenko's punishment strictly under the law.

On June 10, an extraordinary session of the Rostov-on-Don City Duma adopted a statement demanding that deputy Ostrovenko should abdicate his deputy's status.
