Azerbaijan suspends criminal case against blogger Elnur Medzhidli
The General Prosecutor's Office (GPO) of Azerbaijan has suspended criminal proceedings against Elnur Medzhidli, an active user of social networks, journalist and blogger, who is now living in France.
The criminal case against Medzhidli, who organized in February-March 2011 a number of actions in the Facebook calling for protest demonstrations in Azerbaijan with demand of democratic changes, was initiated on April 1 under the article of "open calls to violent seizure of power".
However, on June 3, Eldar Sultanov, head of the press service of the GPO, announced suspension of this criminal case; however, he refused to comment on the reasons.
Elnur Medzhidli himself confirmed his innocence in his conversation with the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent and noted that in fact the case, in his opinion, should have been completely stopped, not suspended. "In fact, it is frozen. As soon as I arrive in Azerbaijan, it may be reopened; and they may arrest me. The suspension of the case is not the proof of my innocence," said Medzhidli.
He was one of the founders of the youth group in the Facebook named "March 11 - Grand People's Day", which encouraged citizens of the country to go out into streets on that day and demand democratic changes from the authorities.
