North Ossetia: lawyer convicted for extortion

A North-Ossetian lawyer was sentenced on charges of attempting to steal more than 4 million roubles from his client.

Marat Margiev, a lawyer from the republic's Bar Association, was found guilty of an attempted large-scale fraud, the press service of the Department of the Russian General Prosecutor's Office in North-Caucasian Federal District (NCFD).

The court has sentenced Margiev to three years of imprisonment in a minimum security penal colony. Besides, he was fined by 300,000 roubles, the "Interfax" reports.

"It has been established that Margiev had extorted more than 4.3 million roubles from his client for non-attraction to criminal liability. Allegedly, he was to pass the money to some investigating officer as a bribe. But in fact, the lawyer just embezzled more than 2 million roubles received in December 2009," the General Prosecutor's Office reports.
