Armenia: parliamentary commission supports president's amnesty

On May 20, the Standing Commission on State and Legal Affairs of the National Assembly of Armenia passed a positive opinion on the proposal of President Serzh Sargsyan "On Declaring Amnesty".

Earlier on that very day, President of Armenia addressed the National Assembly with a proposal to announce amnesty dated to the 20th anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Armenia, which will be celebrated on May 28.

The press service of the Armenian Parliament adds that the decision to support the amnesty proposal was approved by the Commission on May 20 at its closed session.

On May 23, the Parliament will start its extraordinary four-day session, which will probably make a final decision on the amnesty issue, the IA "News-Armenia" writes.

Currently, Armenian prisons keep six persons, whom the opposition treats to be political prisoners.
