15 oppositionists-participants in April 2 rally arrested in Azerbaijan
Elnur Medjidli, a member of the youth branch of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), was arrested in Azerbaijan in connection with the criminal case on the oppositional rally in Baku on April 2 this year.
In the evening on May 13, the Sabail District Court ruled to arrest Medjidli for 2 months. He is accused of crushing shop windows during the protest action.
Akper Bagirov, Medjidli's advocate, finds the charges unjustified. According to the lawyer, his client had committed no illegal acts; he intends to file an appeal against the ruling.
Including Medjidli, now the total count of the persons arrested for taking part in the rally on April 2, makes 15 persons, said Gyulyaga Aslanly, an activist of the Civil Movement for Democracy "Public Chamber" (CMDPC). One more activist of the opposition, placed "under police control", is also under inquiry. "Two more activists were arrested on the eve of the March youth protests," added Aslanly.
