A campaign "Temperance at the wheel!" started in Georgia
A presentation of a road safety campaign "Temperance at the wheel!" passed off on May, 11, in Tbilisi. It was initiated by the first lady of the country Sandra Roelofs.
Press service of the first lady of Georgia reported that the goal of the project was to make the citizens more conscious of the danger of drunken driving and reduce the number of road accidents caused by the driver's intoxication.
Representatives of the institutions and organizations dealing with road safety and popularization of healthy life-style took part in the presentation.
On May, 11, people of 70 countries celebrate official opening of the global campaign of road safety decade of the UNO, "Novosti-Georgia" reports.
The total number of road accidents in Georgia in 2010 came to 2 516. 509 cases out of these had a lethal outcome, 5 615 persons got injuries of different extent of gravity. The number of road accidents compared to 2009 increased by 6,6%.
196 cases of drunken driving were registered. 30 people perished as a result and 319 got injured. 1 200 road accidents were caused by excess of the speed-limit. 174 cases out of these had a lethal outcome, 1 751 persons were injured, "Trend" reports referring to the Ministry of Interior Affairs of Georgia.
According to the data of World Health Organization (WHO), a little more than 4 liters of pure alcohol a year fall on one person in Georgia. In Armenia as well as in Russia this figure makes about 11 liters a year, and 8 liters in Azerbaijan, News.am reports.
Earlier, the "Caucasian Knot" reported that innovations connected with traffic safety were enacted in Georgia, in particular, on November, 10, a fine for tinting the car window glasses was established, since August, 1, the sums of fine for traffic infringement were increased.
