A convict woman in Georgia went on a hunger strike of protest
Convict Natalia Badalyants in Georgian colony No 5 went on a hunger strike of protest. This is her way of expressing protest against the decisions of the Committee for Mercy and release on parole which she considers unfair.
The news of the woman's hunger strike which started on April, 25, came from human rights activist Zaza Davitaia whom the convict had contacted. According to him, by means of her hunger strike Natalia Badalyants is protesting against heartless attitude towards women convicts which influences solving the questions of mercy, amnesty and release on parole (ROP).
According to Badalyants, for incomprehensible reasons ROP is granted only to the convicts who have a month or two of custody term left or those who do not deserve it by their behaviour. The woman considers that the convicts who meet all legal criteria for release for some vague reasons remain out of sight of the Committee.
Natalia Badalyants demands to stop discrimination and corrupt practice of solving the problems of ROP. She says that is just the only goal of her action. At the same time, the convict stated that she had no claims on the administration of the prison, "Georgia-Online" reports.
There have been no comments in connection with the hunger strike from the administration of the colony or the Committee for Mercy yet.
