Defendants in Nalchik attack case protest against removal of refrigerators and TV-sets from their cells
Today, at the trial about the attack on Nalchik, undertaken on October 13, 2001, the defendant Azamat Akhkubekov announced a statement that a group of defendants was ready to go on hunger strike as of tomorrow in protest against removal by the SIZO administration of the refrigerators and TV-sets, which had been bought by inmates' relatives. The statement was signed by 24 defendants.
The SIZO (pre-trial prison) administration gave no comment on the incident. However, earlier, in the talk with the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent, officials from the SIZO explained that the TV-sets and refrigerators, even though bought by defendants' relatives, had been delivered through various charitable organizations; therefore, they are not owned by specific defendants. Besides, the institution has a definite limit on electric power consumption.
The court added the statement to the protocol of the session.
